Recipe Ingredients

  • Mixed Nuts – A blend of almonds, cashews, walnuts, or pecans works great. Nuts add crunch, flavor, and healthy fats.
  • Rolled Oats – Offer structure and chewiness while helping bind the bars together.
  • Honey – Acts as a natural sweetener and glue to hold the bars in place.
  • Salt – Just a pinch to balance the sweetness and enhance the flavor.
  • Dark Chocolate Chips – Adds richness and indulgence without overwhelming the bar.
  • Coconut Oil – Helps the chocolate melt smoothly and set nicely once chilled.

Variations

  • Add dried fruit – Chopped dried apricots, cranberries, or raisins make for a great addition.
  • Stir in seeds – Chia seeds, flaxseeds, or pumpkin seeds add texture and an extra nutrient boost.
  • Switch the sweetener – Use maple syrup or brown rice syrup instead of honey for a slightly different flavor or to make them vegan.
  • Make it nut-free – Use sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds and certified gluten-free oats if needed.

How to Make Homemade Granola Oat Bars

Ingredients to make homemade granola nut bars combined in a bowl.
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9×9-inch baking dish with parchment paper. In a large mixing bowl, stir together the mixed nuts, rolled oats, honey, and salt until everything is well coated and combined.
Mixture placed and packed into the prepared baking dish.
  1. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and press down very firmly to compact the mixture into an even layer. Bake for 15 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and edges are slightly crisp.

  1. Remove from the oven and let cool completely in the baking dish—this helps the bars hold together. While cooling, melt the dark chocolate chips and coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring in between until fully smooth. Once cool, remove the granola mixture from the baking pan.

Tips for Making the Best Granola Bars

  • Pack them tight – Press the oat and nut mixture down firmly to help the bars hold their shape after baking.
  • Cool completely – Let the bars cool fully before slicing to prevent crumbling.
  • Use a sharp knife – Cut cleanly through the bars once cooled to get even edges.
  • Don’t skip the chocolate – Even just a drizzle elevates these bars into something special.

Recipe FAQs

How do I store homemade granola bars?

Store the bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week, or in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. You can also freeze them for up to 3 months.

Can I make these granola bars gluten-free?

Yes, just make sure your rolled oats are certified gluten-free.

Can I use quick oats instead of rolled oats?

Rolled oats give the bars more structure and chewiness. Quick oats will work, but the texture will be slightly softer.

How do I reheat these bars?

They’re best enjoyed at room temperature or cold. If you’d like to soften them slightly, you can microwave one for about 5–10 seconds.

Can I skip the chocolate?

Yes, you can leave out the chocolate entirely or replace it with a simple nut butter drizzle if you want to keep the sugar even lower.
